Another big update that came with the patch had nothing to do with a bug, it was however, a change in the online games themselves. Before the patch, teams would go into a shootout after a five minute overtime period.

This is the standard rule in regular season games in the NHL. However, after a plethora of feedback, EA chose to take the game to a minute-sudden-death-overtime-period. What this did was prevent players from going into a shootout, shooting once with their player, and then having to rely on the computer the rest of the time. It is also the format used during the postseason in the NHL. This addition kept players engaged the entire game, and also made overtime much more exciting.

So with the patch came a lot of good, you quickly saw teams that revolved their game around cheese goals, instantly drop in the standings. The A. With all these great improvements, there are still issues. There are about 2 or 3 cheese goals that were not addressed. They are not as apparent as the original ones, but they still can wreak havoc on a team.

Not that it was a bad game before, but they completely changed the way penalties were called, modified the flip dumps made them higher and never on goal , and even added a control input on the first patch, which was to map the vision control LT on offense so that you could swing at loose pucks without accidentally checking guys instead. Played some more online last night, there seems to be neutral zone turnovers occurring!

The game just feels so much more realistic. I am pumped about the patch because it is an insight into where NHL10 is heading. So looking forward to 10 as it is a completely new game as opposed to a patch.
